How Prone To gossip Are You?

My early Sunday morning reading lead me to the information I am about to share with you today. It is an excerpt from a book called The Magic Of Thinking Big written by David J. Schwartz, which I highly recommend if:

  • You want to learn to believe in yourself
  • You want to develop the Action habit
  • You want to build confidence and destroy fear
  • You want to think and dream creatively
  • You want to turn defeat into victory
  • You want to think like a leader
Cutting a long story short the chapter I was reading this morning was on how to manage your environment, precisely how to avoid Thought Poison. I will leave the concept of thought poison for another day and just focus on "The Gossip Test".

OK do not get me wrong here, I am not saying all conversations is indeed gossip. Shop talk, the occasional rant are necessary at times and even better when they are constructive. Below are the questions to the gossip proneness test, tell me how you do by posting some comments when you have taken the test:

  1. Do I spread rumors about other people?
  2. Do I enjoy hearing reports about a scandal?
  3. Do I always have a good word to say about others?
  4. Do I encourage others to bring their rumors to me? Am I rumor receptive?
  5. Do I judge others based solely on facts?
  6. Do I keep confidential information, well, confidential?
  7. Do I precede my conversations with "Don't tell anybody"?
  8. Do I feel guilty about what I say concerning other people?
Just consider this for a moment; Taking a hammer and bashing your neighbor's shiny new car to a pulp is not going to make your car look one bit better. Rather spend your time studying what your neighbor is doing right to be able to afford such a nice car.

Think about these questions next time someone comes to you with some "hot gossip" and make sure you keep yourself safe from "Thought Poison".

Read, Enjoy and share, until next time Peace and Love.

20 Steps To Writing A Book Part 2

The past week has been quite hectic, with the day job calling as well as a reggae concert I attended towards the end of last week. It was an exciting and yet surreal experience being at the show, I grew up listening to these two big reggae artists and never at that time did I think I would get to see them perform live on stage.

I have deliberately withheld details of who the artists are as I have a review of the concert and some photos coming shortly so you do not have long to wait to find who the mystery gig was.

OK apologies you had to wait this long for part 2 of my How To Write A Book Article, but I am sure you have been busy going through the first 10 parts. Now lets go on to the next one...

11. Once you have finished dictating your entire book, have someone type it out for you and give it back so you can move to the next step.

12. This next step is the beginning of some long hard hours. Set up a strict work schedule and block off two, three or four hours at a time. Discipline yourself to sit down and edit during this time, always remember to take regular breaks to refresh yourself.

13. Edit the entire book from front to back the first time. Correct the grammar and typing mistakes. Create the necessary paragraphing. This has to be the longest job of editing in the whole book creation process.

14. Write your Introduction, a Preface and Acknowledgements if necessary. I am sure you are wondering why this only gets mentioned now? Well, you now more or less have a "book" and you know exactly what it is about and its better to write the Introduction now.

15. The second edit provides structure to your book. Break up the text with a heading every 2, 3, 4 paragraphs, making it “bite-sized” and easy to read.

16. Place a quote at the beginning of each chapter in your Third edit. Create three, five or seven action steps at the end of each chapter if it is a self-improvement or educational book.

17. Your fourth edit allows you to polish the sentences, delete unnecessary material, and make final corrections.

18. Completely reread the entire book in your fifth and final edit, from cover to cover. This should take you the least amount of time of all since you are now very familiar with your book.

19. Writing a book is a time consuming process that requires 50-100 hours of work, once you have gathered all your material and carried out all your research

20. Gentle classical background music is highly recommended when you are working. It improves alertness, creativity and fluency.

I hope to one day apply all these steps in writing my own book. In the meantime I hope I have given you the starting point you have been looking for. You may have been entertaining the idea for a long time and never got to act on it. My message for you today is "there is never a better moment to start than the present moment". Grab the initiative, stop thinking and start working on your book today.

Your support and feedback is immensely appreciated, and please feel free to send your work for proof reading or share your concepts with me so we can work together to get your book ready.

Until the next post Read, Enjoy and Share. Peace and Love

20 Steps To Writing A Book Part 1 - Inspired By Brian Tracy

how to write a book
At some point in your life you may come to the realization you want to put your life story in writing, it may follow a life changing event like the birth of your first child, getting married or losing someone you hold dear. Whatever the motivation I believe that following the 20 steps laid out below will ensure you have a product that you will be proud of. I am yet to put these steps in practice but I just had to share them as I believe we are all at different stages in our lives. Please share your success stories when you finally get published, now that it is even easier with the advent of eBooks, Amazon and the Kindle.

1. Begin with a message, an idea, or story that you feel passionately about and would like to share

2. You must be an expert on your subject. You must know 10 words for every word you write. If you write on success, you must already be successful. If you write on money, you must already be rich. If you write on relationships, you must already
be happily married. I beg to differ with Brian here, depending on whether your story is fact or fiction you do not really need to have prior experience, just a healthy dose of creativity will do

3. Target audience definition is a very important consideration, who is going to read your book? Define them and you will find it easier as you will be writing “for them”.

4. Write it and they will read it, if money is not your motivation and you are sharing a special message, and then your book is a success if only one person reads it. If however, it is meant to be a best seller then make sure you have a large target audience.

5. Research, research and research some more. Buy everything that has ever been written about the subject and read it, then read it again. This step makes sure you are able to set your book apart from everything else that has been written on the subject, it creates your unique selling point.

6. Remember the research phase is very important, collect all the information required before you start writing.

7. Organization is key; arrange your material into seven or as many chapters as you think will be required to tell your story, each flowing in a logical order, from beginning to end.

8. Outline the key-point in each chapter on the front of an A4 sized writing pad.

9. Arrange the key points in each chapter from No.1 through to the end until you have all the key ideas for the chapter on paper.

10. Now the fun begins, make sure you have a decent dictation machine because you will need it. Start from the beginning and dictate your story supported by the materials you have put together.

Of Goals and Goal Setting - Part 2

"The Most Important Thing About Goals Is Having One"
                                                Geoffrey F Albert
I decided to begin this article by the quote by Geoffrey Albert and I could not word it any better myself. Goals translate our dreams and wishes into reality. If you know exactly what you want to achieve and have the belief in yourself, then you can achieve success.

The following four simple steps will lead to your success:

  1. Create GIANT goals for giant goals produce giant motivation - do not fall into the trap of "making ends meet" the simplistic goals like "paying your bills" will not give you the power to create a compelling future.
  2. Develop a definite plan of ACTION - remember we are all dreamers, but that which sets the successful apart from everyone else is that they have gone beyond just dreaming, and taken action to make their dreams a reality.
  3.  Set a DEADLINE by which you intend to have achieved your goal. A goal without a deadline is mere wishful thinking, banish thoughts like " it would be nice if I had such and such..." Thinking will not get you anywhere, doing will!
  4. Break down your goal into SMALL STEPS so that you are always achieving something and that will keep you motivated.
I hope these four actions steps will take you from the realm of mere dreamers to the next level. Do put these steps into action and you will be amazed at the kind of results you will achieve. Until next time, live with passion.

Of Goals and Goal Setting Part 1

My last two posts have been centered around the topic of persistence, why it is a very important skill necessary for success and I also provided tips on how to develop the skill. I hope by now you have taken action and are already on your journey to attaining this essential skill.

Now that I have had time to go over and really analyse the material I put out in my last articles, it seems like I put the milk before the hot water (my sister would understand, we argued a while back about what goes in first when making a cup of tea) or maybe the horse before the cart would be a more familiar expression.

I have gone and made the natural assumption that everyone is working towards a goal of some shape or form. Maybe I am wrong and there would be someone still stuck at the starting line? Maybe you are still putting on your running shoes, or maybe flexing your muscles just like Dwain Chambers? Some of you are still undecided whether to join the race or not, let me rain on your parade, whether you are aware of it or not, you already are in the race. Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that it is always a good idea to start from the beginning and therefore this article is going to be about Goals and the process of goal setting.

I understand there is a lot of other material on goals and goal setting out there, and I am not going to say forget whatever you have come across before and follow what I say here. Different people take in information in different ways and maybe my way will resonate with you more than anything else you have studied, or maybe it will not. This is my take on goals and goal setting and I will be the first to admit it will not be for everyone who will read this article, and as long as I light the path for even one person then I will be happy.

" Unless you know what you want from life and are determined to get it, you will be forced to accept the mere crumbs left by others who knew where they were going and had a plan for getting there" - Napoleon Hill's Unlimited Success, 52 Steps To Personal & Financial Reward

Do come back for part 2 where I outline how to design your goals, because even if having goals is absolutely important, how you design them is even more so. I look forward to sharing with you in part 2 and until then remember " A man is a goal-seeking animal. His life only has meaning if he is reaching out and striving for his goals." ARISTOTLE

Developing the Persistence Habit

As I mentioned in my last post that I would write a follow up article to provide concrete steps one can take to develop the persistence habit, and so here it is. The world is changing at an ever accelerating pace and it is more important now than ever to be able to adapt to these changes. The development of the unique mental strength of persistence will ensure that you are able to combat the ferocious power of repeated rejections and a myriad of other obstacles you encounter on a day to day basis.
If you strongly and truly believe in something, with every fiber of your body, through persistence you will achieve it. Today and NOW is the moment you have to decide to become a different person, decide to be one of the few people who make things happen and who receive the lion’s share of the profits. To digress a little bit I would like to share my frustration with the current model of “work” we all live by. We have been brought up in a society that believes, a child goes to school to learn to become an employee, who then goes out into the world, gets a job and stick at that job for the rest of their life. They are to work 5 or more days a week (or they are looked down upon as a slacker) and are to be grateful for the measly 20 days holiday a year. Imagine that, you spend more of your life at work than you do living and I made the personal decision that I have had ENOUGH!! My new Philosophy is now Screw Work, Let's Play and I no longer subscribe to that school of thought anymore, call me rebellious or whatever but I made the decision and so should you. I know it is not going to be easy and that is all part of the whole trap, being an employee is easy money. You just show up, do your time, make everyone happy, and a check is in you account at the end of the month, how easy can it get. That is the very reason why most people still wake up grudgingly everyday and make their way into work, they are afraid of hard! I accept how hard it is going to be and I am confident that if I persist then I will certainly achieve my goal.
Developing the persistence habit is like going to the gym, to develop a well sculptured body and defined muscles you have to train them. You should make persistence a well defined mental muscle. People always tend to find substitutes for certain things, but there is no other quality that can replace persistence.Neither superior skills nor a formal education can measure up, or intelligence, not even a charming personality.
Persistence is not something you read about in a book, or in this case, on a blog. It is simply about being and doing, about taking action, falling down, getting up and carrying on. It is about challenging yourself and willing yourself to keep on keeping on, even against all odds.
Ultimately your goal is to make persistence your way of life, you have to consciously make a choice and it begins with a burning desire to achieve a given goal. Persistence has often been described as self discipline in action and the biggest test of self discipline is the ability to persist when faced with adversarial forces.
Below are four tried and trusted steps to developing the habit of persistence:
  1. Know EXACTLY what you want - we all  experience our own Alice in Wonderland moment, when we have to make a decision on which path to take when the road ahead of us reaches a fork. This this the moment you have to set your mind to the outcome you would like to achieve, otherwise “...if you do not know where you want to go, how will you know when you get there?”
  2. Develop a big enough WHY - the why is going to make sure you are motivated enough to reach your goal, have a big enough why and you can rest assured that no obstacle is going to knock you off the path you have decided to carve for yourself.
  3. Outline the HOW - the why is always bigger than anything else and you do not really need to know exactly how you will get to your final destination. The most important thing is that you actually set off, imagine if Christopher Columbus had only dreamt of sailing but never actually got to cast off.
  4. Cultivate a positive mental attitude - it takes a positive mental attitude to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. It is nothing more than guaranteed that on your way to achieving your goals you will encounter hardships of many hues and colours. A positive mental attitude will carry you through these periods of despair.
These 4 steps will take you well on your path to developing the persistence habit and do not wait for  tomorrow to start applying them. Grab yourself a piece of paper and start writing your future today, as they always say, there is no better moment than the present.

Persistence, that which remains when the excitement is gone?

We all recall the initial excitement associated with a brand new pursuit, maybe a newly discovered hobby, sport, toy or past time. How we are flooded with energy to get out there and do something so that we continue to enjoy the benefits our new venture provides. We are on an emotional high due to the endorphin flooding the pleasure centers of our brain. Through the course of time our excitement begins to wane, and if we are not very committed to the now not so new exploit we end up giving it up all together.

I am not immune to what I will term the “new toy effect” and I can recall a number of situations over the years when I have experienced this very phenomenon. However, the one trait separating successful people from the not so successful ones is persistence, a dogged determination of staying the course until the goal is attained. This article aims to highlight the importance of this attribute and the ways anyone can cultivate this personality trait. As in all things we have attempted to do in our lives for the first time, the beginning is always the most difficult. Imagine a kid’s first swing at the baseball, a baby taking its first step, your first attempt at driving, you get the idea.

It does not take a special person to stick with it, all it requires is the honing of the persistence trait, developing an unwavering determination to see out your goal and all the benefits attaining your goal will bring to you. Every successful person who has ever lived has at one point or another been asked the question “how did you get to where you are today?” and in more or less the same words have alluded to the development of this very character trait. Napoleon Hill could not have summed it up any better when he said “Persistence is to the character of man as carbon is to steel”.

If you are serious about attaining your goal then you must be serious about cultivating and nurturing the ability to persist. How many times are you willing to try your hand at something new and fail?, because there are no guarantees when you step out of your comfort zone to confront an unfamiliar environment, once, twice, or a dozen times? I am sure by now you have come across the famous story of how many attempts Thomas Edison had at making the electric light bulb, how about 10,000 times as a guess? Did I hear you gasp or it was just me, yes 10,000 attempts, now imagine that! where would you be in your life right now, if you had persisted at something you tried your hand at for 10,000 attempts and you had not given up?

In more recent memory we have Sir James Dyson, whose autobiography I am currently reading Against the Odds: An Autobiography , and he goes into how he developed the bag-less Dyson Dc26i Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner . Have a guess at how many cyclones he built while testing out his theories? The answer is 5,127 prototypes, and if he had given up when the first or second one did not produce the desired result, we could still be stuck with dust clogged hoovers. Such was his determination to make his invention work that he worked day and night testing his theories, discounting them, going back to the drawing table, sinking deeper into debt but all was worth it in the end. He recalls a time when he was travelling around Europe trying to sell the licence to manufacture his first vacuum cleaner “…I survived on a sort of manana attitude: tomorrow would always be better”

I know the temptation to quit always seems greater, but if we are equipped with the right tools and the correct mindset to overcome this temptation, then we are already on our way to achieve our goals. In my next post I will provide you with tips and practical action steps you can take to get started. I look forward to sharing with you in my next post and until then remember "The most interesting thing about a postage stamp is the persistence with which it sticks to its job. – Napoleon Hill"

The second "tude"-Gratitude!

How many times a day do you give thanks for everything that you are and everything that you have in your life? Once, twice, three times or maybe it is never? Well it is never too late to start and there is no better time to start than NOW!

I will make this very simple for you, by just concentrating on your immediate surroundings I bet you can identify 5 blessings to be grateful for.

  1. The ability to read  - you have access to the material I am sharing with you now because of the ability to read, count yourself fortunate as there are millions of people out there who do not have access to the learning resources to further expand their worlds by reading and bettering themselves.
  2. The gift of Vision - closely linked to the first blessing is the ability to explore the world visually.
  3. The gift of Laughter, imagine being unable to laugh and sharing the joys of your life's experiences.
  4. I AM ALIVE and therefore I am grateful every single day my alarm goes off in the morning, I have lived to see another day and to enjoy it.
  5. I have a computer/smartphone therefore my life is not that bad.
Moral of the story is: your entire life is a blessing and there are a lot of things we take for granted but should be grateful for. It is the simple things which make our lives worth living, a smile from a child or loved one, the warmth of the sun on your skin, your favorite natural smell, familiar sounds and voices. By living with an attitude of gratitude you possess the ability to rise to any altitude.
